Roseanne Liang is a director and screenwriter from Aotearoa New Zealand of Hong Kong Chinese descent. She was named an Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi Laureate in 2025.
Her debut feature, My Wedding and Other Secrets, was the highest-grossing New Zealand film of its release year, adapted from her festival-hit documentary Banana in a Nutshell, which played to sold-out audiences at the New Zealand International Film Festival.
Roseanne's early work spanned television comedy and short film, including the Berlinale award-winning Take 3 and cult webseries Flat3 and Friday Night Bites. Her breakthrough action short Do No Harm, which premiered at Sundance before screening at SXSW, led to Hollywood representation and her first US feature, Shadow in the Cloud. The film won the People's Choice Award in the Midnight Madness programme at the Toronto International Film Festival.
She went on to co-create, write, direct and showrun two seasons of the post-apocalyptic comedy-drama Creamerie, before serving as a director and co-executive producer on Netflix's live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Since then, Roseanne has directed episodes of Apple TV+'s Murderbot, starring Alexander Skarsgård and based on Martha Wells' acclaimed Murderbot Diaries, and is currently directing on Netflix's Queenstown while developing her next action feature.
